Safety Tips For Doing Online Payment Using Credit Or Debit Card


As number of online transactions is increasing day by day use of credit or debit cards have also increased.  This also resulted in increased online payment frauds. When it comes to online payment credit card are generally safe. To make online payment using any card more safer check out following tips to avoid any online scams.Here are some safety tips for doing online payment using credit or debit card.

Safety tips for using online payment are:

1.Use secure internet connection. As far as possible don’t use public hotspot. Shop online only from your own computer or laptop (or that of trusted friend) with a private Wi-Fi connection.

2.Don’t share your personal information with every site you visit.

3.Don’t enter your personal banking information, credit/debit card information or investment account information on a computer which is not protected with proper updated anti-virus and anti-spyware software (i.e. on unsecured websites).(Most of such anti-virus software updates automatically if you have software  installed.) Before entering any credit or debit card information just ensure the address used “https” instead “http”. Also ensure your browser showing secure padlock sign the address bar (or elsewhere in your browser window).

4.Log off from the site and close the browser once you finish transaction. Never let any website store your credit or debit card number.

5.Whenever possible use your credit card for online shopping. Avoid using debit cards as if there are any fraudulent charges on credit card usage it can be easily disputed. In case of debit card use for payment, amount is directly debited from your account, so dispute resolution would be difficult.

6.The best and secure way to use credit card is using virtual credit card (VCC) for online shopping. As VCC is replica of the actual credit card generated by online user to transact on any website. It is generated in virtual environment and contains all the required information same as of credit card, thus no need to carry your actual credit card ‘safely’ in your wallet.  VCC is valid only for one-time transaction and automatically gets expired once the transaction is over. Also user is allowed to set the credit limit of VCC. So even if the card is hacked; it will not be useful as card expires after one successful transaction. And almost all payment gateways accept VCC as a real credit card.

7.Keep the password strong. It should not be easy to decode the password. e.g. 1234 is not a good password. The password should be a good mix of numbers, characters (both upper and lower case) and special symbols. Don’t use obvious names/numbers like your name, date of birth etc.

8.If you receive any email asking for your credit card details, delete it. Don’t respond to such emails even if they look official mails from your bank. No bank asks for such details over phone or e-mail.

9.If you receive an e-mail with link to any shopping site (even if it is big name), don’t click on this link. Rather go to the address bar and type the site name you want directly on the browser. This will protect you from clicking fraudulent links.

10.If someone calls and claims that they are from your bank, never give the credit card information over phone. Instead you call back your bank and provide the number, if it is really needed.

11.Avoid sending any payment related information via e-mail.

12.All branded card issuers and retailers offer easy to use PIN code protection for online purchase e.g. ‘Verified by Visa’, ‘MasterCard Secure Code’. This feature gives you dual factor protection. For this you just need to register your card and set up your PIN. Later on whenever you do online purchases just use this PIN.

13.Keep your PIN number secret, memorize it. Don’t write it or keep it with the card. Don’t share your PIN number over phone. No person or even bank should ask your PIN number.

14.Block the view from others when you are entering your PIN number, even in ATMs. Don’t let other person enter your PIN; not even cashier.

15.Make sure the website also displays a certification from trusted companied like ‘VeriSign’, McAfee, and TRUSTe etc.

16.As soon as you receive your credit or debit card, sign the back of it. As if you lose the unsigned card then anyone can sign it and use it as you. Always note down credit card issuer bank’s helpline number, as in case of loss you can inform the bank immediately and restrict card’s misuse.

17.If possible keep your credit card away from your purse or wallet.

18.Keep only the number of credit or debit cards you actually need. Don’t carry too many credit cards at one time.

19. Store your credit card statements safely. When they are no longer needed you can shred them. Alternatively you can maintain one separate folder in your machine to keep all the previous statement for any future reference. Thus no need to keep all old papers with you which are not required now.

20.Check your credit card statement every time you receive it;make sure it doesn’t contain any unauthorized charges or unfamiliar activity. If you notice any unauthorized charges then bring it to the notice of your bank within 60 days of receipt of the statement, by providing your account number, name, additional charges and the reason why they are incorrect.

21.Follow your basic instinct. If you feel website is shady then don’t proceed further. You can usually trust big names but lesser known website or the one which is poorly designed and looks outdated should better be avoided.

22.Be suspicious of the offers that seem too good to be true. That might be selling any illegal items.

23.As far as possible don’t do automatic transfers to linked accounts, specially a high value transactions. Many banks offer customers the option of linking a savings account or line of credit to their checking account, with an automatic transfer of funds. Such transfers are more prone to frauds.
