Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s ‘yatra’ in Mini Cooper sparks controversy

The ‘Jana Jagratha Yatra’, led by CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, sparked a controversy on Wednesday with IUML and BJP leaders alleging that the luxury car used by the CPI(M) leader to travel during the reception accorded to the ‘yatra’ at Koduvally in Kozhikode belonged to an accused in a gold smuggling case.

IUML state secretary M.C Mayin Haji told that the Mini Cooper Convertible car in which Kodiyeri travelled belonged to Karat Faisal, who was an accused in a gold smuggling case registered by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in connection with alleged attempt to smuggle gold through Karipur Airport in 2013.

Karat Faisal, who was then a member of the Koduvally grama panchayat, was taken into custody by DRI officials on March 27, 2014 and was made seventh accused in the case.

Mayin Haji alleged that the incident has exposed the link of CPI(M) leaders with the ‘hawala mafia’.

BJP leader K. Surendran also posted a photograph in his Facebook page in which Balakrishnan is seen waving to the party supporters from a red Mini Cooper car during the LDF’s ‘Jana Jagratha Yatra’ at Koduvally.

The BJP leader claimed he has more evidence to prove Balakrishnan’s alleged link with Faisal and challenged the state government to probe it in detail.

“The incident proves the CPI(M) leaders have crony relationship with the criminals. Faisal Karat is an accused in many gold smuggling cases. By using the luxury vehicle of an accused, Balakrishnan once again clarified the party’s stand on such criminals,” Surendran said.
